Falling in Love with Utah

By Adriane Berg

There are millions of Americans looking for a second Romance. The popularity of “Under the Tuscan Sun” that married renewal with love and sense of place was inevitable in a country where we celebrate a 50th birthday every 10 seconds.

My life is no exception. I was ready to find a love beyond Manhattan. Whether I was thinking of retirement, “retirement” or semi retiring I wasn’t sure. Nor did I know the climate, terrain or ambience that would do for the rest of my life. If any one had suggested Utah I would have said the daft. Where’s the take out Chinese or the Broadway lights.

Then ion exchanged my time-share for Snowbird two years before the Olympics and I was hooked, forever. Since then I have returned many times and in many seasons. I am now on the look out for my second home to turn into a primary residence one day. But you need not visits Utah to become a resident. It will do very well to be a tourist there. But I warn you—you will leave a convert to its charms.

Here are just a few:

Salt Lake City

SALT lake will surprise you first for its EXCELLENT RESTAURANTS, MOST NOTABLY THE Tuscany and the Metropolitan. Salt Lake is a latecomer to multiple fine dining so it can build form the best. At the Tuscany we dined I and beatifically rendition of Italian décor on traditional fare that worth twice the price. At Metropolis you can choose ala caret or set to for several pries fix choices. This fusion chine comes up to the best in 5 courses; with suggested wine menus you’ll encounter anywhere. I am in danger of revealing a secret when I tell about the Ca restaurant – chaque at the base of the mountain as you approach Snowbird the peacocks roam as do lamas and sheep, the topiary is French and so is most of the food. Go for branch and enjoy the famous egg dishes.

Salt Lake is also the home of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and you can spend an afternoon learning about Mormon culture, hearing a performance and looking up your genealogy. Salt Lake has its share of theatre, including wonderful Opera Festival. But the best thing about Sat Lake it that it is a city emerging. For those of us who live in cities with big reputations it lowers the stress level to walk a city where single-family homes can still have a horse n the back yard.

Yet, the Grand America a 5-start hotel owned by   is the Versailles of the west. Every detail form a $ 3 million dollar Dresden porcelain mirror to the exquisite design of every room make this a world class hotel Conferences and public speaking are my life, and I never seen so mach attention to detail and thoughtfulness whether for tourist or business hospitality.

Skiing and all weather sports-It impossible to think of Utah with out list the amazing number of National Parks confined in its borders. They include:

What Utah did for me was get me outside! And that was a life changer. No matter how sedentary you are you cannot help but respond to Utah’s outdoor activates. Whether you visit the Park City a very upscale town catering to the high tone shivers and condo owners of Derry Park and the like, or raft down the Snake River, you are out of the house. I find myself hiking, kayaking, snow shoeing, and often face-to-face with a moose, without really trying. Even the students at the University of Utah have a bus that takes them skiing or horseback riding after classes.

Seer beauty-the climates in Utah are health giving, at least for me. The high altitude, cool clear air of the mountains can be mixed with warmest swimming an icing weather within half an hour. Go and serif you take to the herbs that permeate the air and pine that invigorates you. Some of the most important herbal farms like the Young Family Farm can be visited.

Lake Powell-To my view the most wonderful of family adventures is house boating among the canons of Lake Powell, a   lake create when the   was dammed. A houseboat instructor that teaches you al tie need to know in about an hour greeted us. The boats are floating condos depending on size you can several bathrooms, bedrooms, and all hake TV, and barbeque families. Where you cook a delicate pasta nd eat on the boat or bold a campfire under the stars you bring your family closer together. After only one day my daughter was Washington dashes. One morning she woke us up to show us the breast she had made. It’s easy to wax poetic over the scenery; I bet you can picture the red rocks, the gray ridges and the blue waters in your minds eye. If not contact for a cry room. But it’s hard to express what being out in that country earns to your psuchi. You return with months of street free memories to which you can return over and over aging if life gets too hectic.

It’s not easy to stop in my list of the glories of Utah. St. George is already becoming a contended to Las Vegas for retirement living. But despite its run of Broadway shows and other big time entertainment that’s not my pick for my second home.

At this time I’m thinking seriously about Duchies. This may come as a surprise even to Utahans. Decagon is a big county about 90 males from Salt Lake which both nest everything and nothing at the same time. You can easily dire to Sundance for the famous film festival, the spa and the intermediate appending, or to Salt LAKE itself. But woo willprobabaly want to stay overnight there. Descente is also near Dinosaur terrify and the ancient, where I can indulge in an old fantasy to be an archeologist. But aside form the

 Unite Mountains

Dinosaur National Monument at Vernal

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

Zion National Park

Capitol Reef National Park

Arches National Park

Canyon land’s National; park

National Bryce Canyon National Park Colorado river 1937 glen canyon dam and recreation area

What can you say a bout a county I the Uinta mountains with plartaues, and lakes that can develop ony 20% of its land? I can say it may be the next big thing, but part of me hopes not. The country is bathed in beauty and not much else. The lands have been set aside as recreation areas, state parks, reservoirs and native American territory. The new retirmenet settlers like me either must but raw land and build or latch on to one of the ver few ddevelopers. I visisted the UTAH MINI RANCHES which caught my eye form an unpretentious ad in “Wher To Retire Magazine.’ And I was hooked. From any from $59,000 to over $1,000 will buy you a custom desined wood home .  Wrap around porces, fireplaces and more can be added,.  Runs he devlpmenet like a tonka toy game, you move around set pieces to crete yopur drea. As I write I am awaiting a plot map with a lot picked out for my needs.
